About MS Word

Word is basically a word processor, which is designed by Microsoft Corporation. This application was initially released in 1983. Word is a component of the Microsoft Office suit. However, some people also get it as a standalone product. Its actual beginning was with the Word 2003 version. In more recent years, it is called as Microsoft Office Word instead of just Microsoft Word. The 2010 version is the latest version of Microsoft Word. The most current versions are Word 2010 for Windows and Word 2008 for Mac.

File Extensions and Formats in Microsoft Word: The native file formats in Microsoft Word are .doc and .docx file extensions. The .doc extension has been used in different versions of MS Word and the newer .docx extension denotes the Office Open XML international standard for documents. DOCX file extension is used by Word 2007 for Windows; by Word 2008 for Macintosh; and by many new applications from other vendors (like OpenOffice.org Writer).
